Clinical Trials & Pharmacy Checking Station

Friday was a shorter day at work! We started off that morning observing the clinical trials technician for the pharmacy (Vivienne) She coordinates all the medication for the clinical trials performed at Wythenshawe, screens all the clinical trials prior, and writes up the protocol for each trial. Vivienne explained her typical day to day role as well as the process for how trials get started and are carried out at the hospital.

After we left Vivienne, we watched the clinical checking bench process. There is a clinical checking bench in the pharmacy that a pharmacist sits at. When a prescription comes in, it has to be clinically checked by a pharmacist before it can be dispensed but once it is dispensed it just has to be accuracy checked, which can be performed by a technician, prior to going out to the patient. Elise and I tried out our skills checking a few prescriptions. While each pharmacist has their own checking method, it was interesting watching one of the pharmacists go through the step by step process they use for clinically checking a prescription.

The remainder of the afternoon was used to find an interesting, yet not too complicated patient to do a patient case presentation on. Elise and I opted for the MAU ward since we had both already been there and had worked with the two pharmacists who typically cover that ward. Once we found their drug charts, patient notes, and gathered all the necessary information, we headed off for home!

We worked a bit on the project we have at Wythenshawe when we got home and then started to pack because that evening we were headed to...DUBLIN!
