Monday, Elise and I set off for Wythenshawe Hospital. We have a bit of a trek to get to the bus stop and then a 30 minute bus ride to the hospital so we were not too excited when we walked outside that morning to find rain! The tricky thing about going to Wythenshawe is that the bus only comes at certain specified times and if you miss your time then you're out of luck in regards to being on time!
We managed to make it to the bus stop on time, and this time we were actually going the right way.
**Side note: Friday we were supposed to meet our preceptor at Wythenshawe in the morning. I think he wanted to make sure that we knew where we were going and to be able to meet Jodie who had coordinated our schedule/activities while at the hospital. We ended up on the right bus but it was going in the wrong direction! Needless to say we were an hour or so late and looked like wet rats as it was pouring that day! Our preceptor definitely knew best...that re-con mission was definitely necessary.
So, Monday was all business. We received induction to the hospital with various mini lectures on information governance, infection control, fire safety, health and safety awareness, moving and handling, safer transfusion, medicines management, and venous thromboembolism.
We received schedules Friday outlining the plan for our time at the hospital. Jodie did an awesome job of putting together a wide array of activities that will provide Elise and I with a thorough view of how things are run at Wethenshawe, the role of various pharmacists, and a typical day to day flow within the pharmacy. She has even set up time for us to visit both the surgery and medicine wards as well as the cystic fibrosis satellite, diabetic clinic, antimicrobial ward, and hear about their work with clinical trials. Next week Elise and I will also put together a patient case presentation in an area of our interest.
I think that this week is going to fly by given all the activities Jodie has lined up for us! Elise and I are also still working on doing data collection for our other project that looks at prescribing attitudes of physicians as well as planning our seminar presentation for the Manchester College of Pharmacy on the PharmD program we have at UK! It's going to be a busy last two weeks! This week is also going to fly by because we booked our final trip to Dublin on Monday as well! WOOO! IRELAND...MY HOMELAND!
Hard to believe that two weeks is all that is left of this experience! I have really enjoyed it...except for yesterday night when I ended up with a bout of food poisoning. I had to miss out on Tuesday's activities at the hospital as I was up all night battling the nasty little bug that thought it was ok to invade my GI tract! I think after things settled down I went into a coma and slept for the next 6 hours because next thing I knew it was 1pm. I managed to pull myself out of bed and seem to be doing ok minus the fact I feel as though I just ran a marathon!
I made a mental note for things I should pack for next time just in case this happens again:
--- Gatorade!!!! I don't understand how England functions without gatorade
--- pepto
--- my mother. it's times like these that make me wish that I would have tried harder to cram my mother into my suitcase!
Here's to hoping that I do not have any more episodes of sickness before I leave!
